WEST YELLOWSTONE, Mont. - Overcoming bitter temperatures, former Olympic biathlete Rob Rosser won the North American Biathlon Pursuit Competition in West Yellowstone Sunday. Marc Sheppard of West Yellowstone finished second. Twenty-two-year-old Olympic hopeful Brian Olsen finished fourth but recorded the fastest time in Sunday's race.

The race is one of a series of qualifying races for Olympic trials Dec. 29 in Fort Kent, Maine. Rosser, Sheppard and Olsen have secured invitations to the trials.

On the shaded portions of the course, temperatures hovered below zero, hampering athletes' ability to switch from skiing to shooting at the shooting range. Each contestant shot 10 rounds standing and 10 rounds prone in four different bouts while racing over the 12.5 kilometer course. A missed shot added a minute penalty to times.
