A pair of biathletes with connections to the University of Vermont took major steps toward qualifying for the Turin Games at the U.S. Olympic Trials that concluded Tuesday in Fort Kent, Maine.
Lowell Bailey of Lake Placid, N.Y., placed third overall in the four days of trials and Brian Olsen of Minneapolis finished fourth.
Bailey is a 2005 UVM graduate who excelled on the Catamounts' Nordic ski team. Olsen attended UVM from 2002-04 and plans to return to the school in the fall.
Both competitors have been nominated for the Olympic team along with top finishers Tim Burke and Jeremy Teela and prequalifier Jay Hakkinen. The U.S. Olympic Committee will make the final selections for the Turin Games, said U.S. Biathlon Association spokesman Jerry Kokesh.
The nominees for the U.S. women's team are: Rachel Steer, Sarah Conrad, Carolyn Treacy and twins Lanny and Tracy Barnes.
